Concrete, plaster, and some similar things do get hot when they set up. This is normal and part of the process. You might see on big road construction projects that they put straw on fresh concrete in the winter to keep the heat in and prevent freezing. In the summer, they water fresh concrete to keep it cooler which ends up with stronger concrete. You are supposed to do this with smaller projects, like a backyard patio or driveway but patching a hole in a basement floor isn't worth the mess and effort.
