Fire pit installation

Posted by John on June 10th, 2004 11:16 AM

I am going to build a 4 foot wide fire pit at my associations beach area. This will be on a gentle grade with heavy clay soil underneath. I am planning on making this from precast concrete blocks in a circle mortared together. I was originally going to put in a 4 inch concrete base and install footings under the outside wall to make sure it is something that will last. I am also going to have weep holes along all sides for the wind and rain to get in and out.

My question is if the concrete base will absorb too much heat compared to just digging a hole in the ground. Any suggestions?
