Hi Debbie,
Do not underestimate the dangers that are involved when removing asbestos insulation w/o taking the necessary and PROPER precautions.
This type of work is BEST left to professionals. Yes, it's expensive because it's a cancer-causing, DANGEROUS material. Yes, it's expensive because of the aforementioned AND it must be disposed of safely. Yes, it's expensive because of the necessary and PROPER precautions that professionals take when doing the work.
You, or anyone in your house, may not die from lung cancer today, tomorrow, or in 10 years. But your 'mis-handling' of that 'stuff' which may leave it floating around the house via the ventilation system for some time to come, will be the reason those folk will thank you later for saving a few $$$ at the expense of their health. It's just not worth it! If you have to ask how to do this, you're WAAAAAY over your head.
Hire a professional Abatement Company. Asbestos Abatement is a profession. My best to you and hope this helps.
