chimney construction Posted by tomh on June 11th, 2004 01:33 PM In reply to chimney repair? by Amy on June 11th, 2004 01:02 PM [Go to top of thread]
We had a chimney built around this same time. The construction was pretty complex with a firebrick firebox at the base, corbeling out to a smoke shelf and damper assembly, then refractory flue liner to the top. Although you saw brick from the outside, the chimney was mostly block surrounding the flue liner and brick was only a veneer. I realize there are a number of ways to build a chimney, but a flue liner would seem be necessary to prevent leaking gasses and deterioration of mortar.
Your description sounds like the chimney is all brick with no liner? Is there a damper? Is the firebox lined with refractory brick? Do you use an insert? Anyway, get a second opinion, and be sure the fireplace and chimney is constructed to be used as a direct fired fireplace. If it is, just have the chimney brushed down annually, and you should have no problem go undetected that would cause a hazardous condition. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
