After having done my floors I would suggest sanding the paint and old finish off the floors (they will need to be sanded anyway) Then apply an oil based sealer and then a water based finish ( 2 coats minimum) We have red oak flooring and it looks beautiful now. If you have a soft wood floor I am not sure if this would work.
