Get a %RH meter to check the %RH you are maintaining with the dehumidifiers. Radio Shack or Wal-Mart for $15-20. You need <50% RH to stop mold/mildew from growing. That includes remote spots like closets. If any water infiltrates the corners under the carpet or other wet spots, musty odors will follow. If carpet ever gets wet, fans and <50%RH will take a week to dry. Residential dehumidifiers are weak in cool basements and may check EPA's web site for efficiency and capacity. You need about 50 pints per 1,200 sq.ft. of space.
