Drawers Posted by BobF on June 17th, 2004 04:09 AM In reply to rehabbing built-in chest of drawers by Mary on June 17th, 2004 02:34 AM [Go to top of thread]
You could write a book about this!
I would bet that the drawer sides are wood and they ride on the wooden cabinet frame. Further, that the drawer sides are worn away toward the middle. Yes, I have seen these type cabinets!
I'd say you have two options. One is to cut away a small amount from the bottom of the sides, enough to make them flat. Then glue on strips of wood to replace what you cut away. Not easy to do without taking the drawers apart, but if you can manage that, you will have fresh wood for the drawers to ride on. Then put metal thumbtacks on the cabinet frame for the drawers to ride on and wax the bottoms of the drawer sides so they will wear less. Better yet, install nylon rub blocks on the cabinet instead of thumbtacks.
The other way is to knock apart the drawers and replace the sides altogether. That will require a table saw.
What I would do is essentially save the drawer fronts and make new boxes. I'd make them 1" narrower than they are so I could use metal slides. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
