I had a similar problem when I was replacing my tub drain. The cross bars had rotted out and I had nothing to grab ahold of. I found a tool in the plumbing section of my local Lowes that was a wrench of sorts. It basically fits down into the drain and grabs the inside diameter of the old drain. Then you put a 3/8 drive ratchet on it and turn the wrench to remove the drain. Hope this helps.
