Thanks, Bob... you guessed right about the structure of the dresser. I'm an editor, so if you want to write that book, go for it and I'll help! I can even provide pics of the work in progress ;-)

Seriously, your second suggestion is probably the one we will go with, for a couple of different reasons. First, it seems like it is the cleanest way to get the job done. I'm not quite sure I trust the drawer bottoms to hold up too much longer, either.

The people who previously owned the house stripped paint and finish from the outside of the monster. I don't think we will stain it, will probably leave it "distressed" looking and put a finish on there to protect the wood. What kind of finish would you recommend? A poly finish?
