Good answer Tom. Adding to a lineset is OK for an HVAC tech because they have the expertise and tools to remove and store the refrigerants, braze the additions to the lineset, braze in a suction drier/filter, purge the air with a vacuum pump, and restore the refrigerant to the unit in just the correct amount so it doesn't damage the unit without losing the ozone-damaging refrigerant to the atmosphere. That is why only certified refrigerant handlers who have taken and passed the EPA certification test for refrigerants can legally do the work, as they are certified to purchase refrigerants. It is not a DIY job.
