I also had have this problem. I bought the home in 2000 and it was built in 82 as well. I was never told about this problem when I moved in as well by my Real Estate Agent or by the home inspector. My first leak occured near the water heater in less than a 1 1/2. I had to tear down the wall by the water heater in the garage and clean up all the water in the garage. I still haven't repaired the wall fearing that there might be another leak. I was able to just use a simple hose clamp due to the original fitting was broken. I never understood why they had said that there was water in the crawl space when I was first trying to get the home. Then in November 2003, I kept hearing water in crawlspace but didn't think nothing of it until I opened up the door to it. I heard water down there and it was about a couple of inches deep. No wonder I had a big water bill, thinking it was my six kids and all. I also had two foster kids but they were gone by then so I thought it was all the showering and stuff. Well, I had in November 2003 and still have a leak in a hose that goes to the shower. I was able to monkey rig it and hoping it would last until the summer of this year. It had a very small dripping leak, but today, it finally gave in. It's now gushing and I'm having the water shut off as we speak. If anybody has any clues or ideas on how to replace or fix, please let me know. I looked in Home Depot, Lowes and two other places here in Salem, OR. If anybody leaves near here, let me know if any place that carries repair stuff. Thanks.
