Handicapped Tubs Issue

Posted by Barbara Berger on June 20th, 2004 12:01 PM

I'm getting ready to see my elderly parents for father's day. I'm bracing myself to see a "contract" my dad signed with a handicapped tub salesman, for a walk-in tub for $14, 000. This salesman took 20% of the price with him at that same visit. My parents are in their 80's, mildly forgetful, but fully functional and very independant. They are honest, hard-working folk who believe in the same of their fellow man. This obviously makes them "sitting ducks" for any huckster trying to sell them something. Hasn't anyone addressed this handicapped tub issue? Obviously, a large segment of the population is in need of this. The people (elderly) who might be negotiating (like my dad) are a demographic that is very sisceptible to scam artists. So is anyone out there concerned? Is there anyone who has a source for solid information? Has anyone actually dealt with an honest ETHICAL saleperson? (wouldn't that be historic!) I know that part of the problem is that I am not involved with my parents on a daily basis. They live in NY, and I'm in NJ. Is there ANYONE out there with some suggestions? Thanks for even reading this long-winded email. barb
