I am about to start building an Oak staircase for my home. I have the Coffman Staircase building guide which is very detailed. One thing that concerns me about constructing the staircase is how the tread and riser meet the skirt board on the closed side of the staircase. The book implies that the treads and risers are just butted against the skirt board. It seems to me that the skirt board should be dadoed a 1/4" or so to receive the riser and treads in order to prevent squeeks and seperation as the tread and risers expand and contract. None of the references I've found on the WEB talk about doing this. It would certainly be easier not to dado the skirt board, but I don't want any of the perceived probems noted above. A problem I can see in dadoing the skirt board is that once in place there is know way of using fasteners from the back side to screw the tread and riser to the skirt board. Please provide adivce !
