Easiest Painting technique Ralph Lauren advertises?

I wanted to see if anyone has tried out the textured, colorwashing or other techniques that are shown in the Ralph Lauren Painting guide.... We are interested in trying colorwashing for the living room, but we're bad at painting and want to know what the easiest or best technique to use.
