how do u get glue off of carpet!!

I forgot to put the lid back on my glue bottle its just ordinary glue and i went to bed because it was really late and during the night i slept walked and knocked it over!!!! now i have a little spot of glue on my carpet. we tried to get it off with water and a few other cleaners but now the carpet is all ruff in the spot where i spilled it. PLEASE if n e one knows how to get glue out of carpet please tell me!!!
