First, the mods will let you write a book if necessary to make your point. Take the space you need, and then some. It is not an issue.
Other than that, you have hit the nail on the head, that framing can shift, and a flexible patching compound can help. The framers don't get blamed for cracks though, its the drywallers fault. If a sheet of drywall is carried all the way around the door, then cut to expose the door, there is no seam to crack. The problem is caused by lining up the drywall seam with the edge of the door. Ready Patch is a vinyl acrylic patching compound by Zinsser, and should be more flexible without cracking.
