I am a drywall finisher. My experience with cracking joints above hearders is that they usually always come back. Installation techniques have changed over the years. In the past the drywall was hung up to the rough opening of the door and a small piece placed over the header from king stud to king stud. This method leaves a weak joint because the points where the header is attached are weaker and more suseptable to movement. Today, if there is to be a joint above the door, we place it towards the middle of the header and it is very rare that cracks appear using this method.

An easy remedy is to cut out the crack, re-fasten the joint on both sides, apply fiberglass mesh tape and coat with a fast set joint compound. The ultimate solution is to cut the joint into the middle of the door or header and past the king stud to the next stud and re-finish using the same method as above.
