How to get rid of musty smell in dresser

We had tried everything in an antique dresser and could not get rid of the smell. The last suggestion we received actually worked!!

Fill each drawer with crumpled newspaper and about 6 charcoal briquettes and leave them closed up in the drawers for at least 2 weeks.
