Raising a Header

I think you have the right general idea, but cutting the header free is going to be tough.
You will need temporary braces for the roof over the opening. Maybe 2x4s nailed in place vertically every 4'.
Be sure to use one single jack stud on each side of the opening - that is, don't stick a filler block on top - or use two jack studs on each side if that is what was used originally.
That header is going to be heavy! Brace it carefully to be sure it doesn't get away from you. I would use a pair of pivoted vertical supports on each end. If you cut them the right length, you will be able to walk them from angled to vertical to get the header in the right place. You may have to use a column jack to raise the header.
