Basement Anti-Cooling Question

Posted by Jason on July 7th, 2004 10:02 AM

The home we recently purchased has a finished basement. Forced air heating and cooling throughout the house, including ceiling vents in the basement. The problem I'm having, while minor, is that to maintain a comfortable tempature in the summer on the main floor the basement becomes downright frigid, even with the vents closed and the door closed between the main level and basement. It also seems that a fair amount of cool air "leaks" into the basement through the vents even when closed.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to maybe stop some of this air leaking or otherwise maintain the temperature level in the basement short of just opening the basement windows (not energy effecient, obviously) or covering the vents with plastic (not particularly attractive)? And installing "zoned" heating and cooling is not an option.

I'm pretty sure the answer is going to be "learn to enjoy the cool", but you guys have answers for just about everything else so thought I'd give it a shot.
