Jason I had the same problem, and have done what t.b. suggested and it works well. Our furnace with heat exchanger is in the basement. I installed a floor level return air register directly on the return plenum of the furnace. When I notice the basement getting ucomfortably cool, I switch the furnace fan to continuous run on a low speed, and it evens out the temp. in the house quite well.
