In reply to cold basement by t.b. on July 7th, 2004 10:59 AM [Go to top of thread]

Ok. I'm at work now so can't look at the furnace itself for any details on how my system might already be setup or not setup, but I definitely have a cold air return in the basement, directly off the furnace. In one bedroom and the dining room on the main level there are returns near the ceilings (9 foot ceilings!) and the original low wall vents in all of the rooms on the main level were converted to returns as when the ductwork was put in the basement new floor vents were put throughout the main level as well.

Based on this does anyone have any more tips?

Just laying it out now I'm wondering if it might be best to close all the old "wall/floor" returns on the main level, leaving only the two ceiling returns open and leave the basement return open as well to pull cool air from the basement... possibly leaving the fan on low to circulate the air when the AC isn't running. As it stands now I have all the returns open, including the basement, and the vents in the basement closed.

Does this sound right?

I'm an architect by schooling, but HVAC was not my thing!
