just by simply blocking the sun's penetration through the window can make a big difference. Simple blinds or coverings can block the sun's rays from warming the room. In the summer months we turn our blinds the opposite direction so they block most of the sunshine in the south facing triple window we have. This alone can cut the room temperature by several degrees.
