That is what happened to my machine (purchased late 2001), I put a load of clothes in, turned it on, left the laundry room, heard a loud 'boom' checked it out--door was wide open, water was inches deep EVERYWHERE-- and the machine was still filling. The machine apparently did not stop filling with water until it burst the door open, and continued to fill until I could finally get it turned off (no great feat), I never had the mildew problem, but this problem has sent me to the laundromat due to lack of funds to have the machine fixed--and Maytag said "oh, so sorry, you are out of warrenty"! I had a 1962 Sears washer (purchased used in 1981) from 1981 to 2001 with only minor repairs--less than $100 in all that time--but I had to get this front loader, expecting I would have it until I died--wrong, if I had any money, I would be back at Sears buying another of their washers.
