Metal roof - sheath or not to sheath

In reply to Installing a metal roof... by Jennifer Chitwood on April 7th, 2003 11:07 PM [Go to top of thread]

I just stripped corrugated metal roofing off of my garage. I’m guessing it was several decades old. The rafters are 24” on center and are crossed with 1X4s that are 2 feet on center. Unlike a new roofing system the area to be re-roofed is not 100% sheathed – just covered by the 1X4s.

Code notwithstanding, is it possible to install a product such as standing seam metal on this skeletal support or am I doomed to completely sheathing the system before I install new metal? The old corrugated worked very well on the 1X4s but I would prefer top upgrade if possible.
