The information in your post suggests several problems, and the description is not sufficient to make a judgement from here. At first I though truss uplift, but that is not usually a summer problem. Your idea to have an engineer look at it is a good one. I am having problems understanding what you are describing. It would help if you could look at this drawing and describe the problem using common terminology

Bowed walls: what direction? as you look along the length of the house, do the walls lean or belly?, or is the alignment not straight along the foundation?
The major truss: What is this? A center support wall / beam? Most simple roof trusses consist of a flat horizontal member called a bottom chord. The sloped portions of the truss that form the roof surface are called the top chords.
The drywall along the outside of the drywall: This makes no sense.
Cracking along every rafter: Is this a cathedral ceiling or do you mean every bottom chord?
