if its wood,like cedar is then it may rot it,back in the day we use to tamp the post down,all of them.And we tamped them with a dirty fill pertaining sand,gravel,dirt,&DRYportland,[we got this mix delivered but mixing any formula would work]p.s.not so much portland though,i imagine one would want their post to drain well but hold up solid!good luck & its been a whiloe sooo
