Info on Sump pumps

Bruce M.,
You seem to know a great deal about sump pumps. I just bought a house with what I think is a french drain. There's a sump well in the basement. but no pump. The sump well has three large plastic pipeshoses running into it.

After a few days of rain, water in the sump starting overflowing into the rest of the basement. I realize I need a sump pump, but I'm looking for detailed info before I endeavor to hire someone or do it myself. Any resources that you know of?
