It is a shame. And as pointed out there are no winners, but the Woods take the most hit. Everyone else is insured so there is no financial loss to anyone else, and everyone elses name is hidden. Due to disclosure, the Woods are going to take a hit when they sell. I know I'd certainly beat them up on the selling price. This is not likely a truss design issue. So the contractors poor workmanship which caused the problem "gets thrown out with the bathwater".

A truss roof is not new technology. How is it that this contractor doesn't know how to properly install one? What else doesn't he know about housebuilding, that will bite the Woods in the butt once their warrantee is up? Who elses house did he build recently?

So while buying this house may in fact be a boon to a home builder, who can recognize, evaluate and repair if neccessary any future problems, I don't think the Woods signed up to have to wonder if the builder screwed something up every time their new house creaks .

IMO, I think the Woods should have lawyer next to them through the repair and selling process. I'm pretty sure there are a few shrewd lawyers out there who could ensure the Woods, who have done nothing wrong, could walk away just like everyone else (read that "financially restored"), even to the extent of recouping a loss (to due to the disclosure of the problem) on the sale of the house.
