The ceiling fan is about 6 yrs. old and is a standard type 10" blade. When I disconneted the old switch i left some of the insulation on the wire in the switch. The caps have two wires each, one has gray and purpple and the other one has red and white, i put the purpple to neutral and the white to neutral and the gray to #1 on the switch and the red to #2, #3 i put a black wire coming from the ceiling and in the L i left the smaller yellow wire. L and #1 I know is right, but #2 and #3 i'm not sure of because the insulation fell off. Also if L is line why is the wire so small? it's smaller than 16ga. Thanks Bob R.
