Dodgeman, the new forum has been under development for some time. I was been surprised not to see it up last week. The new forum will have voluntary registration. It will allow a registered poster to receive notification of a response to their post. The page will include more quick links to searches and will make posting a response or a new topic more clear. This may help avoid confustion by people that arrive here via search engine.
Unregistered users will continue to be allowed to post. I expect other changes will improve the appearance and use of the forum, (perhaps automatic link building?) but I don't know the whole scope of changes. Greg and David have both expressed an interest in keeing the open and popular look and feel of this real-time, general topic forum. So I don't expect changes to radically alter the experience of the Fix-It forum.
From an administrative point of view, it will be easier to block and delete the numerous spam and illicit posts. I also expect that there will be a mass delete of some of the old long thread topics in the archives.
Hope this helps, I will ask David if he would like to elaborate.
