Room Addition - where to start? Posted by olivia on July 20th, 2004 08:18 AM
I am adding a room to my home and do not have any idea where to start, what steps to start with, etc. I hope someone can help me ! Here are my main questions, so far:
1. Before beginning, how do I know that my house is "structurally" sound and in good shape? (before spending money adding on to it). The house was originally built in the 40s or 50s: and was refurbished; I bought it 5 years ago. It appears to be 2 houses joined together. I have only lived there 5 years and have had to get a new roof and also new siding; what the builder had put on was falling off already. This makes me question whether or not there are other things that are not "sound" that I am now aware of. Since I am female and bought the house on my own, I dont feel confident here. (I did hire a home inspector at the time of purchase). I have had no real problems with the house since I've lived there, but how do I know there might not be a foundation problem or something? (I am a worry wart, just fyi).
2)What are the first steps I need to take when doing an addition? Is a permit required?
3) How do I find reliable/reputable contractors to do this work?
4) How do I figure out what the total costs will be? Is it safe to believe what they tell me, if I get it in writing? How do I pay them, half up front and half when finished/
5) Are there any other things I need to know that I am totally leaving out?
I look forward to your answers ! :)
