I just removed 1960's ceramic mosaic tile from door entryway (apx 5' x 14'). Under this is a 1" bed of mortar. The mortar is gouged and really rough in some places where it crumbled as I cold chiseled out the mosaic. Below the mortar is some kind of metal mesh grid. I'm going to put either vinyl or ceramic tile (not sure yet) on the 5' x 6' by the door and carpet the rest. Should I remove all the mortar and mesh and replace it with plywood? Should I use some other type of underlayment in the area by the door?
