Greetings,
For an entry-way I would suggest removing the mortar and mesh from the floor as well. Make sure that the area is cleaned well. Once you've checked and cleaned the area for level, etc...you'll want to lay Hardibacker down, take your measurements, and cut the hardibacker. Make sure you put a layer of thinset down first, then place the hardiback down and secure it in place with Hardi-Screws according to the installation instructions. Once this is done you can begin your floor layout and start laying tile.
