Ants in my .....!

Dishwasher!
Actually in my in-laws dishwasher. My wife went up north to help out her ill father. Two nights ago she called saying she found about a dozen medium sized black ants running around in the diswasher. (I believe it is a Kenmore, about 10yr. old) She closed it up, ran it through a wash cycle, which of course eliminated them. Last night, a fresh batch of the buggers were back, and this is while the door had been closed up tight the whole time! Does anybody have a clue how they are getting in there? Up through the drain line? Through some type of vent? She tells me she only sees them in the dishwasher, not anywhere else. I am not aware of any openings underneath to get inside of a dishwasher. Just wondering if anyone ever had a similar situation.
