Actually, I was told by a flooring store manager not to ever use any rubber backed mats on vinyl because it will discolor the floor. It's not a function of quality of rubber, it's simply a chemical reaction between the vinyl and the rubber. I don't think washing will help. I bought dual sided bath mats to avoid this problem in my last home and the vinyl still looked good after 8 years when we sold the house.
