Be careful. Not all surge protectors protect against lightning. Lightning can travel through wiring and across copper plumbing lines and phone lines . We too have a whole house surge protector, but I don't trust it to handle a lightning strike. I live in the mid-atlantic and we get our fair share of t-storms here too. Every house should be grounded as well as anything attached, like a satellite dish. Also, using appliances during thunderstorms is extremely dangerous because a direct strike to your home won't be stopped by a surge protector. Wiring and pipes are fabulous conductors. People have been deafened and killed while talking on wired phones during storms. Cordless phones are safe. Showering or using water like doing dishes, however is not safe even if your home is grounded. I'm not as concerned about the computer, tv, phone, etc as I am about human life. Waiting out a storm is the safest way to go.
