in my opinion, painted wood paneling looks trashy. why not remove the finish and stain, most of the dark color will be removed by the paint remover, especially if you use the gel kind that requires cleanup with mineral spirits. if there is still too much darkness, you can bleach and restrain to a lighter hue. when i was looking for a home, i passed several that had the judges paneling painted WHITE yukky. JMO
