painted wallpaper removal with a chisel

I have found on my 1907 home, that a 1" or 1 1/2" sharp chisel will remove painted wallpaper off of plaster walls. I had so many coats of paint on my wallpaper, I could not get the water to soak through without pulverizing the top layers of paint. I thought I would pass this on because I have not heard of anyone using this method.
