Paintable Wallpaper

HELP! I'm painting over some paintable wallpaper with a gorgeous darker color. The color is gorgeous on the walls, but it is drying unevenly colored. There are light patches and dark patches throughout the entire effect. I've painted on regular walls with dark colors and have never seen it do anything like this! Is it the glue?
