finishing my firepit

I recently had a gas firepit built in my backyard. Now I have the firepit and a fire ring, but I don't know how to finish it. What do I do next? Do I add a level of sand and then add lava rock over the top of that? How much sand and how much lava rock? Should the fire ring be completely buried by the sand?
As you can see, I have a ton of questions, I hope I can find some help here.
