House Skirting

We have an old home with vinyl siding and the cheapo looking vinyl skirting. I would like to take off the skirting and replace with lattice to improve airflow to control dampness (we are in coastal S. Texas, so I am not real concerned about winter chills, snow drifts, etc). My father-in-law (an ex-insurance guy) said this was a bad idea as if the house caught fire, the increased air flow from lattice would cause the place to go up like a tinder box. I think he is all wet because if a fire got big enough to use up all the oxygen already under the house, the vinyl skirting would be long since melted.

Opinions please.
