crown molding

I am putting 5'' crown molding in a room with 10 foot ceilings. The room is about 11' by 13' not including the front bay which has three windows. If it matters, the house is a victorian townhouse in Wash. DC built in 1906. My problem is this: The windows in the bay have pediments that come about 8'' from the ceiling. If I put the 5'' crown in the bay, that leaves me a small sliver of wall between the crown and the pediments that I think would look strange. My idea was to end the crown at the bay (i am using corner blocks anyway) and just have a small piece of quarter round or something similar in the bay. Does this sound like a reasonable solution? Is there any rule to follow in this situation or do you just go with what you think looks good which i think the quarter round looks okay. Thanks for your help
