Most homes are built with water hammer arrestors (short lengths of vertical pipe which act as accumulators at the end of runs) When they are new and full of air they work well. But over a 6mo to a year they slowly fill with water (the air disolves into the water) and they become ineffective. Doing what you do drains the water back out of the arrestor and it works well until it fills with water again.
