the trap that bink was talking about is under the sink.see how it's designed to hold water so no sewer gases come into the room?so if the vent stack is blocked then if you run one drain it could suck the water out of another trap somewhere else in the house.if all the traps are holding water then sometimes you can stop the smell like this:stuff a rag into the drain as far as you can(leaving enough sticking out so you can pull it back out)and pour bleach with a small watering can into the sink overflow(the hole on the upper inside of the sink)and let it set for a while.this has worked for me on more than once.
