The claim is that these magnetic (or magnetohydrodynamic) water softeners turn the calcium and magnesium compounds into a form that forms a soft precipitate that gets removed by the water flow instead of forming a hard scale on the pipes. There are Web sites discussing this (usually by people selling these units). Is this real, is it schlock, I don't know...some strange things have been done with magnetism.
