2nd floor addition

The previous owners of our house added a second story about 10 years ago. The lower part of the house is 10 years older than the upper. We had floor to ceiling bookshelves installed on this 2nd floor and have 1000's of books on them. Also, a very large t.v., lots of stereo equipment and a very heavy piece of exercise machinery. As I lay on the downstairs couch last night I wondered how much weight that story could take before collapsing onto me and my son in another room. We have a tremendous about of weight up there. How do I know if it can take it?
