Basement Conversion

I own an old house built on a stone/mortar foundation, --has a small michigan basement/cemented floor, partial block brick walls hold back dirt under the rest of the house. I want to build a modern basement myself. Is it doable? Where do I start to ensure the job is done right? I guess the largest concern is supporting this two story home during the project. Any insight? Thanks.
