Cutting a Hole -- How do I do it?

I need to cut rectangular openings in a masonry wall (gable end walls) in the attic. The wall is hollow ceramic block (the red clay stuff, not concrete block)and it is covered with brick on the
exterior. How do I do it? How do I reinforce the opening after (before?) I cut? Steel bars?
