getting rid of wasp's nest without pesticides?

A few days ago, I was weeding my herb garden and suddenly started getting stung by what looked like yellowjackets. They got me five times, the little $*&*$^s. I went back afterwards and spotted a small wasp's nest under the edge of the porch, right next to where I'd been. So, now I'm thinking it was wasps that were stinging me, although I suppose it's possible I've got wasps AND yellowjackets, lucky me, and I disturbed the yellowjackets while I was weeding.

The question is, how can I get rid of either/both of them without using some pesticide that's going to toxify my garden? I want those herbs! But I also need to get rid of these beasties -- even if I was willing to give up the herbs, which I'm not, my neighbor's kid is severely allergic. I need to get rid of these soon. A friend suggested waiting until night and then blasting the nest off with a hose -- would that get rid of them?
